Eve's Pudding

Here's a little reminder of a delicious British pudding you probably haven't eaten in years

This week we have dug deep into our cookbooks and found a classic recipe for a scrumptious pudding. Pupils from all key stages have worked hard peeling, coring and chopping their Bramley apples to form the delicious base of their Eve’s Pudding. Adding a sprinkle of raisins and preparing the cake mixture with great care has helped to ensure each pudding tasted fantastic! To have a crack at this simple yet scrumptious pudding at home follow the recipe below.

Ingredients:

Eves Pudding.jpg

6 large Bramley apples, finely sliced

200g unsalted butter

140g raisins

100g soft brown sugar

4 eggs

200g self-raising flour

Method:

1.    Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Peel, core and slice the apples. Grease a large serving dish, about 2.5 litre/3 litre with 25g/1oz of the butter and tip in the apple. Scatter the raisins over the top.

2.    In a separate dish beat the remaining butter and sugar together for 10 mins until the butter turns pale and the sugar starts to dissolve. Beat in the eggs, then carefully fold in the flour with a large spoon. Spread the batter over the apples, then bake for 45 mins until golden. Serve with the custard.

The Wellspring Way

We are proud to be included in an article about our Trust recently published in Education Executive.

The article highlights our unique approach to healthy living and student voice and how our pupils gain confidence and vocational skills by growing food and then using it to cook their own school meals.

Our Farm Manager and Hospitality and Catering Instructor work extremely hard to develop these exciting learning areas for our pupils.  Their determination and inventiveness is just part of what makes our school so special.

Great Success in PE

The children in Key Stage 2 excelled in P.E last term with all children progressing at least 1 whole level on their P.E trackers from the start of the year. Some children in Key Stage 2 also attended a sit down volleyball tournament at the Huddersfield Leisure Centre, playing 4 games: winning three and drawing one!

The Year 6 children have been working on their swimming certificates and swimming badges aiming to achieve Level 4 by the time they transition into Key Stage 3. They have made amazing progress!

Egypt Comes to 1BS

This week, Class 1BS started to explore the world of Ancient Egypt. The Egyptians had over 2000 Gods and had very firm beliefs about the afterlife. Canopic jars were used to store a person’s organs and then entombed with them. Each jar was represented by a son of Horus. The class made their own jars with clay and they have made a fantastic addition to the Pharaohs display.

In 'Identity' we thought about what superpower we would have having read that each Egyptian God had special powers. We chose our own gift and then made masks creating a character profile that described us.

Finally in cookery we made chicken and garlic pasta and picked  the garlic from the school grounds. The meals were very successful and tasty. It was a good week and an excellent start to the new term.

KS4 Preparing for Change

Lydia Harrison KS4 open afternoon

This week KS4 staff held a parent information afternoon. During the session KS4 pupils, their parents and carers were provided with information about changes to the GCSE grading system, after school revision sessions, revision materials and hints and tips about preparing for imminent exams. It was great to see so many parents and carers actively supporting the students at this crucial time of year.

Ursula from C&K careers explained about the different options available to students post 16 and the support that C&K careers, in partnership with JNA, would provide.

The session closed with tea, biscuits,  an opportunity to look through students work and informal chats with members of the JNA team. A Big thank you to all who attended. Another session is planned later in the year for any other parents and carers of students in years 9 and 10.

New Arrivals

As we (hopefully) say goodbye to winter and welcome spring on the Joseph Norton farm it's all about cats and planting!  We have welcomed our newest members who are yet to be named, our two kittens from Leeds Cat Rescue. They will be staying with us in their new enclosure but will be paying their keep as the new farm pest control. Our micro pigs are now very settled and making great waves with the pupils. Jimmy, Ginger and Charlotte are lovely and vocal, eating from children's hands and enjoying a good stroke. With the turning of the weather comes plants! Tomatoes, peppers, lettuce and cauliflower among many more have been sown this week. The frogspawn laid in the pond will hopefully mean our slugs will also be kept at bay!

Group 7 have had a busy Spring term. The exam season is fast approaching and we have been working on presentational devices and literary terms alongside creative writing and reading in English. In maths, we have been focusing on probability, angles and completing GCSE practice exam papers.

Outdoor education has focused on improving our skills in golfing for our bronze Duke of Edinburgh skills section. In Sport, we have been participating in Kwik Cricket and health related fitness – specifically wrestling.

Group 7 continue to engage with weekly BUMPY sessions and have been completing qualifications in Bike Maintenance.

Group 4 Spring into action!

Ethel Barge

We can't believe that the spring term is here already and just how much we have covered since January. We have been busy learning about science, nature and most importantly ourselves.

A firm favourite was our trip to the Eureka science museum. Having the freedom to move around the space and explore was a great opportunity. Using the riddles in the museum bank to find jewels and gold was great fun and helped us build on our team skills.

In science we have written about space, space travel and how we would survive on missions to far off planets. To really inspire our writing we have made real rocket engines in class. Using vaporising fuel to make miniature rocket engines, we learnt how huge rockets are propelled into the air.

Learning about ourselves is very important to us in group 4. To open our minds to new ways of learning and how we can support ourselves and others we have adopted a growth mind-set. We are changing the way we look upon challenge and finding ways to tackle our reservations and become the best learners and classmates we can be. Please ask us about this as we are keen for others to try this too.

With our growth mind-sets and ambition to succeed we visited the Victoria quays in Sheffield. We explored ways of working well with others and travelled down the canal on a huge barge. We were able to learn about how barges operate, help travel safely through the water and even steer the barge!

We are looking forward to the warmer weather and are planning new adventures together as a class.

Sporting Challenges

Since returning back to school after Christmas we have taken part in lots of fun and challenging activities in our P.E lessons. All our pupils have worked extremely hard to develop their skills in football, handball, dodgeball and volleyball along with their communication and team work skills.

In our health related fitness sessions we have learned about the muscular and cardiovascular system and how to improve health and fitness through exercise. We have taken part in circuit training, Kick Boxing and resistance training in the school gym and also visited other gyms in the local area.

We have been very busy in our extra-curricular fixtures taking part in a number of events and winning the Football tournament at The Zone!!

Grand Designs by Group 5

Over the last few weeks, we have been talking about self-regulation and how we can better design our classroom to support our needs.   To help us when we are feeling stressed or anxious, we decided to turn a storage cupboard into a calming space.  So far we have removed shelving, tables and chairs, filled and painted the room.   We are very pleased with the results and now use the room successfully if we begin to struggle.

Our topic this half term is Time and Space.  In English we began looking at different genres, especially what makes a science fiction story.  In maths we have begun to look at probability and have been able to connect our previous learning on fractions to make quick progress.  As part of the SEMH curriculum, we have begun looking at our future: careers, accommodation etc. and have looked at how to keep fit in space as part of health and wellbeing.

Group 6 Have Been Busy This Week !

We have just moved on to our Himalayas project under our Asia topic and have been excited to learn all about mountain life! We have spent time reading and researching, to produce a piece of creative writing in the form of a travel blog. All the children worked really hard and have produced some fantastic pieces of work.  We thought it would be fun to adventure out in to the local countryside to try map reading and orienteering - we might not be ready to climb Mount Everest yet, but we did have lots of fun in the outdoors.

We are also working hard in maths, interpreting different types of data and graphs. All the children have progressed well, meeting their targets!

On Tuesday we took a trip to The Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and Falconry Centre in Sheffield. Group staff were so proud of the mature and polite behaviour shown by the children when they were out in the community. The outing allowed the children to build on their SEMH development, as well as researching Asian animals and their habitats, for our topic work.
